Smart homes are touted to be the next big reality in America, especially given the interest and eagerness with which Americans have begun consuming technology. But just how popular are smart home solutions right now? Piplsay (powered by Market Cube) surveyed 44,616 Americans to find out the benefits and challenges of this quickly emerging technology. Home automation brands, as well as retailers, can leverage this data in their decision making.
Despite the growing popularity of home automation systems, the majority of U.S. homes still aren’t “smart.” This was one of the findings of the Piplsay survey where over 44,000 Americans revealed their smart home choices preferences.
Price seems to be a major hindrance in smart home adoption, with almost half of Americans finding it out of reach for their budget. Privacy concerns like eavesdropping and security of collected personal data is another reason why about 17% of Americans are hesitant to adopt this technology. Still, there’s good news for brands.
About 40% of Americans are planning to purchase smart home solutions in the coming few months

Among the smart home adopters, over 60% of them have one to two types of automation systems installed. Entertainment devices are the top favorites, with smart speakers like Amazon Echo and Google Home accounting for the bulk of it. However, when it comes to its benefits, nearly five in ten Americans say security and surveillance are the biggest reasons why they would opt for home automation.
With close to 40% of consumers using at least three different smart home solutions at once, America’s growing fascination, as well as dependence, on technology is simply obvious. It’s not surprising, then, that an almost equal percentage of users plan to continue purchasing or upgrading their smart home devices in the future.
Survey Methodology: This Piplsay survey (powered by Market Cube) was conducted nationwide in the US in the month of December 2019. We received 44,616 responses from individuals aged 18 years or older
